About the Show:
The show features six regional artists who work outside of the traditional forms of painting, sculpture, and
drawings. Their subject matter and style derives from comic book illustration, the surreal, alternative culture,
and assemblage. The works are often edgy and have some sense of humor, from droll and understated, to the
more outrageous and obvious.

Topher Crowder (Livonia) delves into storytelling using styles influenced by comics, postcards, TV, and
billboards, which involve memories and emotions. He has a BFA from Wayne State University and is presently
working on his MFA also at Wayne State.

Tom Carey (Ann Arbor) uses techniques from Balinese Shadow Plays and does Technicolor paintings of
monsters and robots from Ultraman. He has his BFA from Wayne State and MFA from the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts.

Julie Renfro (Ann Arbor) is influenced by her quilter mother and architect father, and uses found objects often
glittery to create pieces of meditative beauty and obsessive detail. She has a BFA from the Art Center College
of Design in Pasadena, California.

Mike Sivak (Ann Arbor) creates detailed assemblages in varying scales that become their own worlds. He has
a BS in biology and chemistry from Eastern Michigan University and a BFA from the Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena, California.

Daniel Sperry (Detroit) is the most minimal of the artists in the show, whose work deals with puns, jokes,
nonsense, contradictions, puzzles, and questions. He has a BFA from Wayne State, and tours and records in
the band Child Bite.

Ryan Standfest (St. Clair Shores) creates symbolic and absurd worlds and fantasies that are ordered and
arranged to tell cryptic narrative stories. His work includes printmaking, cinema, and environments. His
degrees include a BFA from Wayne State, and a MFA from the University of Iowa.

Elements Gallery Featured Artist
Susan Aaron-Taylor (Pleasant Ridge) is the featured artist in the Elements Gallery for this summer show. Her
surrealistically sculptured creatures come from dreamscapes and fantasies of the psyche. She has a BS from
Wayne State and a MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester MI, October 3-November 8, 2008. The opening reception is Friday, October 10 from 7-9 pm.

In Hinduism, Kurma (Sanskrit: कुर्म) was the second avatar of Vishnu. Like the Matsya Avatara also belongs to the Satya yuga. Vishnu took the form of a half-man half-tortoise, the lower half being a tortoise. He is normally shown as having four arms. He sat on the bottom of the ocean after the Great Flood. A mountain was placed on his back by the other gods so that they could churn the sea and find the ancient treasures of the Vedic peoples.

Gamera (ガメラ, Gamera?) is a giant, flying turtle-like creature with flames flying out of the leg holes, from a popular series of daikaiju eiga monster movies produced by Daiei Motion Picture Company in Japan. Created in 1965 to rival the success of Toho Studios' Godzilla during the kaiju boom of the mid-to-late 1960s, Gamera has gained fame and notoriety as a Japanese icon in his own right.
In the United States, Gamera attained prominence during the 1970s due to the burgeoning popularity of UHF television stations featuring Saturday afternoon matinee showcases like Creature Double Feature and later in the 1990s when several of his movies were featured on the cult television program Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Turtle Island is the English language translation of many Native American tribes' terms for the continent of North America. The term is proposed as a substitute for or synonym for North America. The term was brought into popular usage by Gary Snyder through his book Turtle Island [1] in 1974. In a later essay, published in At Home on the Earth,[1] Snyder claimed this title as a term referring to North America which synthesizes both indigenous and colonizer cultures by translating the indigenous name into the colonizer's languages (the Spanish "Isla Tortuga" being proposed as a name as well). Snyder argues that understanding North America under the name of Turtle Island will help shift conceptions of the continent.
Referring to North America as Turtle Island suggests a view of North America not merely as a land "discovered" and colonized by people of European descent, but as a land inhabited and stewarded by a collection of rich, diverse, and civilized peoples. This collection may have room for both indigenous and colonizer cultures. This re-framing of the identity of North America is intended to bring about a better cohabitation of these two groups of people. Finally the term suggests to some interpreters a more holistic relationship between people and the continent's ecology, visualizing Turtle Island as an amalgamation of bioregions.

"Destruction of Mu", a shadow play by Monster Island will be performed during the opening of "3 the Hard Way", new art work by Tom Carey, Topher Crowder and Dennis Jones.

At the Zeitgeist Gallery, 2661 Michigan Avenue, 313-965-9192, www.zeitgeistdetroit.org

The reception for the artists will run from 7 pm to midnight, with music around 9pm. There will also be music and visuals by psych freaks UVU.

Featuring new work by Tom Carey, Topher Crowder, and Dennis Jones.
Tom Carey is a painter and printmaker who creates absurd imagery in an expressionist vocabulary. He was born and raised in Detroit, MI. Tom showed an early interest in drawing, especially monsters and robots, although his mother preferred that he focused on portraits of the Christ and Roman Catholic saints. Despite this difference in aesthetic opinion, Tom's family encouraged his artistic endeavors. Tom attended Wayne State University, where he received his BFA in 1996. After tiring of the Cass Corridor Artist lifestyle, Tom moved to Philadelphia in 1998. While living in Philadelphia, he completed an MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, showed his work at Spector and other local galleries, and had one of his hand-made books purchased by the Print Collection of the New York Public Library. Although he had contemplated the idea of becoming an academic painter in the Wyeths/Brandywine Valley School mold, Tom returned to his childhood love of drawing monsters and robots, focusing increasingly on relief prints. Back in Michigan since 2003, Tom continues to produce paintings, prints, and drawings of the creatures residing in the squishy fields of his sub-conscious.

ChrisTopher Crowder puts it this way: “I have always loved the concept of storytelling through images and have found inspiration in the animated Saturday morning cartoons from my childhood, vintage postcards, comic books of the 1960s and 1970s, and roadside billboards. I have chosen to capturing a collection of daily emotions and cryptic memories from my childhood, around the early 1970s, of giant illuminated beer-bottle billboards served up electric brews, smelling the pungent odor of grease paint and alcohol while being entertained by clowns in the front row at a Shriner’s Circus, Saturday mornings spent with H.R. Pufnstuf, and the televised pictures of the Vietnam War. My method, inspired by a Saturday-morning cartoon edited for commercials, a postcard received from a foreign location, a comic book with more than a few pages torn out, or a partial, high-speed glimpse at a roadside billboard, reveals my childhood memories and everyday emotions.

Dennis Michael Jones' "...work expresses a sense of play, wonder, delight and discovery. These thoughts and emotions are directly expressed with the varied presence of a child-like everyman. The figures suggest an innocence and hopefulness of childhood—they are my progeny—a metaphor for the creation and realization of ideas—and avatar for the artist as a perpetual child. I think of this body of work as a kind of memorial to these sentiments. With the realization the figures are also toys to be manipulated, or puppets to be controlled, an undercurrent of irony surfaces as the installation comments on the formation of identity and a creative process that has become corrupted, where innocence and naiveté are doubtful possibilities.

This show runs through March 22, 2008.

Twisted, subversive and flat-out brilliant. That's how the work of artist Tom Carey has been described. His art is something everyone should see, nobody understands…yet everybody wants. Tom Carey was born and raised in Detroit. He showed an early interest in drawing, and was especially fond of creating monsters and robots. "I wanted to be a superhero when I was five," Carey said, "But when I realized that it was not an easily attainable career goal, I choose the much more practical, and economically rewarding, vocation of visual artist." Carey attended Wayne State University, receiving his Bachlor of Fine Arts in 1996. After graduation, he began showing his artwork at the Willis Gallery and the Weber Building in Detroit. He moved to Philadelphia in 1998 and completed a Master's of Fine Arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2000. In 2002, he had an artist's book purchased by the Print Collection at the New York Public Library. He returned to Michigan in 2003 and continues to produce paintings, prints, drawings and ceramics. Carey's inspiration's for his works include Mayan hieroglyphics, Silver Age Comic Books (especially the work of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee), and '70s black and white horror magazines. His quirky style elicits a variety of responses, including harsh criticism. "I take it with a grain of salt," Carey said. "I incorporate criticism, good and bad, from my peers into my own interior critique of my work." Carey explains that his favorite work is, "whichever piece is currently sitting on my easel or drawing table, unfinished." He believes that his greatest accomplishment in art is teaching his daughter how to draw, and learning from her at the same time. His pieces from 2000 to the present can be viewed at University Liggett School, 1045 Cook, Grosse Pointe Woods. The show will run through Dec. 21. The gallery is open during normal school hours, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., or on evenings when there is a scheduled school function.

One Person Show at University Liggett School Gallery
